Emergency Generator Project

Montefiore has completed a major infrastructure upgrade to expand its emergency power capacity, resolving limitations of the previous system, which had reached full load and could no longer support additional critical systems. This expansion was essential to ensure reliable backup power for capital improvement initiatives, including the implementation of the Epic electronic health record system and other IT infrastructure upgrades vital to hospital operations. The project included the installation of a new 1,750 kW diesel-powered exterior generator, strategically placed for optimal space utilization and accessibility. A new electrical switchgear system was also installed to efficiently manage and distribute power across current and future loads, ensuring the system is equipped to support the hospital’s long-term growth. As this project involved mission-critical infrastructure, it required careful planning and coordination. Generator placement and construction activities were conducted in full compliance with strict environmental and safety regulations, while utility tie-ins and electrical shutdowns were strategically sequenced to avoid disrupting hospital operations. Coordination with Con Edison, the Department of Buildings, and environmental regulators ensured that all permitting and installation requirements were met. Close collaboration with Montefiore leadership and facilities staff kept the project aligned with operational priorities and future planning goals. The upgraded emergency power system now delivers robust and scalable backup capacity, ensuring uninterrupted operations during outages while supporting ongoing technology and infrastructure initiatives. Through this investment in resilient electrical systems, Montefiore has strengthened its ability to provide safe, uninterrupted, high-quality care and has positioned its facilities for long-term modernization.
