This project involved the construction of a state-of-the-art 13,500-square-foot Labor and Delivery Unit within an active hospital, requiring the decanting of the pediatric wing to maintain operations. The new unit features six private labor and delivery rooms, four triage rooms, two C-section operating rooms, two PACUs, and comprehensive staff support spaces. Extensive life safety and infection control efforts were carefully coordinated within the active hospital wing to ensure uninterrupted patient care. Complex system integration was required to install parallel infant abduction systems on two floors while maintaining active systems below, interfacing with existing service elevators. During construction, severely deteriorated risers were uncovered and replaced, prompting infrastructure upgrades beyond the original scope. These proactive improvements modernized critical hospital systems, future-proofing operations and restoring the facility’s legacy as a premier women’s health and labor and delivery destination in Westchester.
