Moses North Chiller Plant Replacement

This infrastructure upgrade project involved the complete replacement of the chiller system at Montefiore’s Moses North Campus, ensuring reliable, seasonal cooling for patient care, research, and support facilities. The scope included the removal of four aging units and the installation of four new high-capacity 1,000-ton chillers—both electric and steam turbine–driven—to provide dual redundancy and energy flexibility. Associated chilled water and condenser water pumps, upgraded cooling towers, and new BAS controls were also installed to modernize and streamline operations. Executing this work within an active hospital required careful coordination. Mechanical and electrical shutdowns were phased and scheduled to avoid disruption to critical services, with off-hour work implemented to safeguard clinical operations. Collaboration with hospital leadership, facilities staff, and engineering teams ensured seamless integration of new equipment while maintaining operational continuity. The resulting plant provides improved capacity, greater energy efficiency, and enhanced resiliency. By modernizing essential infrastructure in a complex environment, the project strengthens Montefiore’s long-term operational reliability and sustainability goals while supporting its mission of safe, uninterrupted patient care.
